Where is God ???

by

Pastor Bob Long

With the advent of our recent economic adventure similar questions to those raised after 9/11 are emerging. “Where is God when innocent people die?” or “Where is God when children suffer?” Today we are hearing, “Where is God when people lose their home or job or both?”

Perhaps there is a larger question implied, “Is there a God?”

The 20th century (1900-2000) saw the rapid rise of a religion known as Humanism. Like most religions it has several colors or flavors but generally it holds to the doctrine that humans are the supreme beings. Humanists believe men and women reached this lofty status by an evolutionary chain of events. The implication is no God or Creator exists, life as we know it came into being by chance and has progressed to what we are today. Closely joined to this belief is Materialism which states there is only matter, no soul, no Spirit- no God.

In a recent poll of religious persuasions among scientists it was noted that 90% of astronomers who responded said they believe there is a God. ( That may be higher than the butchers, the bakers and the candlestick makers.) The Bible says “The Heavens declare the Glory of God…” (Ps. 19:1a) In the recent past, astronomers have discovered the universe we live in had a beginning. It follows then that there must have been a “Beginner”.

Yale physicist and Nobel Laureate Professor Henry Margenau concludes, “There is only one convincing answer to the intricate laws that have been discovered in the universe, creation by an Omnipotent Omniscient God.” Sir James Jeans, a noted astronomer wrote, “The more I examine the vast expanse of space and the tremendous complexity of these things, the more the universe seems to be one gigantic thought of a truly great Mathematician.”

Because of this and many more convincing arguments, I believe in God. But it does not end there, the Bible says, “Even the demons believe in God and tremble.” (James 2:19) We, must believe, this Creator God took a bodily form as Jesus the Christ and paid the price for a universal sin. The way is now open to transcend this earthly realm of suffering and death to enjoy a higher realm of existence with Him. To do this, we must repent or cast off this cloak of sin and believe our Creator is also our Redeemer. Failure to do this will result in an eternity of suffering.
